7 Forgotten Early Yoga Teachers in America

Yoga Journal
by Philip Desliippe

Most people think hippies and Hare Krishnas were among the first American yogis, but in fact dozens of people with remarkable backgrounds were teaching the practice in the U.S. decades earlier. You won’t believe you’ve never heard these fascinating stories before.

Fascinating work, as always from Professor Deslippe. Interesting how the pioneering yoga teachers used fortune telling, psychic reading and astrology to attract an audience.

The most interesting name on the list is "Yogi Bhagvan" the Indian showman Prof. Deslippe brought to our attention previously. Yogi Bhagvan introduced a system of "physical exercises, diet and self-help psychology" which he called "Humanology." Yogi Bhagvan returned to India where presumably Harbhajan Singh Puri used him as a template before jetting off to America to entice his own customers. Shocking, isn't it, to discover that Bhajan did not invent Humanlogy? Gee, I hope he didn't tell any other whoppers.

I have to wonder the context in which Philip Deslippe's name is listed among the Interviews & Presentations in the latest attempt to enshrine the dead Master on film - "Aquarian Legacy Productions, LLC" documentary titled "Yogi Bhajan's Legacy." http://www.aquarianlegacy.com/feature-y ... egacy.html

Philip, you are so clever and illuminating. At times I feel like strewing rose petals on the ground in front of you, but I resist. I actually manage to resist.

So you have done it! YB's cast of lineage holders have been discovered - discovered by YOU - and they are:

1. The Great Swami D - Dhirendra Brahmachari
Indira and the ‘Indian Rasputin’

2.Virsa Singh

3. and Yogi Bhagvan!
